Red Eared Slider, does it have to have a water filter? Can I just replace the water once a week instead?
My girlfriend got me this turtle this weekend and the person who sold it to her said it would be fine if we change the water once a week but a filter is recommended.
Also, if I leave it near the window is that enough sunlight? Should I buy a UVB/UVA bulb? And how long should I leave the light on?

  1. dont listen to them i have a slider and a window will be fine and u dont need a filter if u wanna take the time to change the water but a filter is alot of help

  2. I suggest put it by the window, but also buy a cheap uva/uvb bulb and leave it on until you go to bed, then turn it off, and turn it on when you get up. But it will also get to enjoy some natural sunlight. If your Red Eared Slider is like the ones you mostly find in beach stores in vacation spots or petstores that are babies and are only the size of a 50 cent piece, then yeah if you wanna just change your water once a week, thats perfectly okay. However, if its a bigger sized one, i think you will find it much easier to invest 15.00 or 20.00 in a cheap filter from walmart, to keep your water not as messy, clear, and less smelly. then you will only have to change water and clean every 2 to 3 weeks.

  3. I would recommend a filter because changing the water every week is very hard work. Plus turtles are very dirty creatures. They need a heat lamp to bask on with a floating dock to get complete out the water a dry off. And they need sunlight and keeping them by a window wont work, so try keeping a uv light or take them out side for sun but dont keep the out there to fry. They also need a heater to heat the water to at least 78 degrees. hope this helps

  4. Filters cut back on the work you have to do. Get one rated for a tank 2-3 times the size of the one you have. Ratings are for fish tanks and turtles are a lot messier.
UV light will not pass through glass. Placing the tank near a window is worthless for basking in UV. Leave the light on for 1/3 to 1/2 the day. You might want to mimic natural day length.

  5. Yes RES are very messy eaters. Don’t put it next to the window cause the water could get to hot. yes you should buy a light. I say leave the light on for about 8-12 hrs a day
