The water cartridge/filter for the ice/water dispenser in my fridge needs replacing every six months or so. At $80 I hesitate to get a new one right away. Is there a potential health threat or will it just be inert?
Thanks.

  1. Tap water is safe to drink, the taste is not as good as filtered though.

  2. Yes, there is a danger in using a filter beyond the recommended life span. Water filter pores are designed with limited capacity. When the pores are clogged with contaminants the filter will no longer work.
In fact, the contaminants will begin to accumulate on the surface of the filter media. Through a process called “break through” the contaminants may break through and come out with your “filtered water.” Your water may become more contaminated than before.
Read the articles on the following referenced blog and website:

  3. What brand is your refrigerator? Most water filters need replacing 6 months to 1 year; depending on the water quality in your area. If you don’t change it, your water will slow and eventually stop (your filter is clogged up from all the debris). In turn your ice makerr will stop working, and your ice/water dispenser will malfunction. Filters should not run more than $50. Go to http://www.panhandleparts.com and check out their selection of water filters and their prices.

  4. The reason for replacing is that they can become clogged. If your water contains high mineral content, it may need to be changed even more often. You don’t want to “starve” the frigs water supply, but you could probably go longer if your water is pretty decent.
